Your daily read - is it awesome?

I'm curled up on the sofa going through my daily reads on the web which includes catching up with blog friends, newspapers, magazines and researching the best pots and pans (for real!).  This is the time I get for reading; at the end of the day, peace and quiet and cup of green tea nearby.  On the weekends its Sunday morning that I cherish.  I don't look nearly as glamourous as Marilyn, but that's another story... well maybe if I squint my eyes and look sideways... umm, no that's not working either!

What's on your reading list these day?  Whatever journal, poem, novel or essay it is, I hope you find some quiet time to enjoy the words.

Back to my friends....

PS: if anyone has any suggestions for a tried and tested favourite cookware brand please pass it on to me.

Snap!

I'm thinking of sunny climes and warm golden hues on a neutral background...  Cadmium and saffron,  bold curves, texture & shadows, and sleek organic shapes - aspects that appear in both images.

I just love this colour and now it's made my day.

Hope you're having a steady start to the week ahead.

In The Schedule

It's going to be a cold few days ahead so what else is there to do but stay in front of the fireplace, relax and check out some of these great links I uncovered this week; fancy feathers at the Lanvin window; virtual gallery for Valentino; an invitation to an elegant lunch for Longines; candid photo of classic movie stars from the 60's & 70's and a delicious treat to warm the tummy.  Enjoy!

+  Birds of a feather... An absolutely gorgeous window display at Lanvin's Rue du Faubourg St Honore store - more images via Trendland.  Illustration above by me.

+  Technology & fashion; Valentino Garavani releases a downloaded version of a 3D virtual museum, bringing fashion exhibits to everyone's fingertips.  Make your own way around corridors and rooms filled with 5000 archived documents in this virtual Palazzo via here.

+  Fancy an invitation to a gala dinner at the Chateau de Chantilly in France?  Who wouldn't right... well stylist Romy Frydmann was lucky enough to attend one hosted by Longines - what a way to practise your french hey?  Lucky girl!... more images via Style Me Romy.

+ Some candid shots of movie stars from 60's & 70's as taken by Daniel Angeli featured via Vanity Fair here.

+  These raspberry and white chocolate muffins are hands down the easiest treat to whip up for a cold morning.  I often get bribed to make a batch of these for the family - eat them when they're hot for the quickest tummy warmer- photo and recipe via Donna Hay.

Stay warm this weekend.

Perfect time for a holiday...Marrakech

Ah, sun where have you gone?  There is no sun in Melbourne today, LatteLisa tells me there is no sun in Luxembourg today, and there is hardly ever any sun in Dublin or London (anyone?)... wait, I think I found it beaming in Marrakech.

La Sultana, a riad situated in the bustling centre of Marrakech, glows with warmth and vivacity not only from the sun in North Africa but from the jewel like colours that decorate each room.

This 28 room accommodation originally consisted of 5 riads that were used as private residences, which have since been merged together to form La Sultana.  Enter the riad from the noisy and crowded streets and be transported into a luxurious, hushed and tranquil environment.  Artisan carved doors lead you into a world not unlike an elegant set from a classic 'Road To' movie starring Bing Crosby and Bob Hope - colour, pattern, texture, beautiful details abound with handmade materials and carvings, individually decorated rooms and their own lavish bathroom - (How beautiful is that green bathroom below?.  But rather than being overdone, the palette offers a lovely assembly of tones and hues layered with intricate craftsmanship and cultural handiwork.  There are kilims from North Africa, lamps from the Middle East and masks from South Africa and a collection of art and furniture that the owners have collected on their world travels.

There is a spa/hammam for your use, a swimming pool and a restaurant which beckons and entices you with a myriad of flavours and spices.  I can only imagine the menu and the aroma from that kitchen.

If it's unique cultural beauty within a stylish and tranquil environment you seek, then I have to say La Sultana looks like it has that in spades.   It's all in the detail...and that shady day bed I think.  Now, for some mint tea.. anyone?

stunning bathroom detail and equally stunning mosaics

some shady relaxation and the beautiful details

aah, that view!

Kick off your heels

Shoes, shoes and more shoes - all shapes and sizes and a myriad of colours.  That describes my shoe-robe!  So why oh why, do I find I haven't got anything to wear.  Seriously, I am in the midst of the bi-annual shoe sort through - you know when you get ready for the sales online and in real life - but I can't bear to get rid of anything because they're all so good and each have a story - I'm a bit romantic like that (also known as a hoarder).

Then I was thinking, I should get them out of the shoe-robe and display them throughout the house - to give it a lived in, kick your heels up kind of feeling everywhere you look.  Hmmm - too messy?  and besides people will think I forgot to put away my shoes right?  Then I remembered I saw these photos via The Coveteur of Style.com's market editor, Marina Larroude's home.

Okay, so the photo shoot has been styled I know that - but don't her shoes look just like little baubles of fancy velvet and suede and crystals?  I can't compete with the rows of Manolos', Louboutins, or Vivier but I can coo over my Prada, Givenchy and DellAcqua slingbacks each time I open the door and wonder what to wear to school drop off right?

More photos over at The Coveteur here.

I adore these velvet Manolo Blahnik slingbacks!

Martin Grant - Sculptural forms

Producing four collections each year and showing to a small crowd of worldwide buyers and media, Australian Martin Grant's brand is steeped in sculptural forms and tailored simplicity.  Well, when you have customers like Lee Radziwell, Cate Blanchett & Lauren Hutton on your books, you must be doing something right - right?

Moving to Paris from Melbourne, via Koji Tatsuno in London where he learnt bespoke tailoring, Martin Grant uses his early sculptural training gained at the Victorian College of the Arts as his foundation and you can see how it colours his aesthetic.  Old world tailoring, hand-finished flourishes, simple clean lines, intricate details and elegant silhouettes punctuate the collections.  Have a look for yourself here - the library of lookbooks from A/W 2004 through to current season 2012 shows Martin's discriminating taste and impeccably tailored pieces share a classicism and timelessness that you could go back to again and again if you were to have any item in your wardrobe; especially one of his coats which he is most lauded for.

Martin has recently been announced as the new designer for the Qantas uniforms - a job that has previously been filled by Yves Saint Laurent & Emilio Pucci to name a few.  I am really looking forward to see his translation of this global brand via his elegant timeless designs.

Grant's work "...speaks to the international woman, the woman who travels, the woman who works... that appeal when she turns the hand-finished buttons in her geranium red Martin Grant coat".  Andre Leon Talley, VogueUS.

Finally, if you think he keeps his designers eye for his ranges, then have a look through his Paris loft apartment below.  Just gorgeous.

Snap!

What's your angle?  Everyone has an angle right?  A perspective, a thought, a thread, a plane from which they see things differently.  But then somethings are so similar it's like 6 degrees of separation - you know like 'The Double Life of Veronique', like 'Three Colours Blue', like these two beautiful, glorious, amazing angles and colours on the artwork and light fitting on the left to the gorgeous perpendicular angles of the Rauwolf clutch on the left.  Do you see it?  (But don't get too technical on me)!

And besides it's Monday and I'm humming that Depeche Mode song used in the recent Dior 'Secret Garden' campaign in Versailles (here) and then that lead me to 80's music, then to New Order and, voila, Blue Monday!

So soothing these blues aren't they - crisp and welcoming.

The bedroom photo on the left I found last week, but in my rush I failed to note where I bookmarked it from (sorry) and the Rauwolf clutch on the right came via the gorgeous Miss Beasley's blog here (Thea did the styling for the photoshoot).   Aren't the angles beautiful and that colour sublime?

In The Schedule

Hold onto your hats, or your turbans, or your headbands, its the weekend... and here are some fabulous reads and links that I've found this week.

+ Following on from the Resort 2013 shows this week, from sweet colour at Alberta Ferretti (here) to glamour tailoring at Zac Posen (above and here), this season might be about transitioning but the impact never lets up.  I think Erin O'Connor is magnificent in these shots chanelling a certain Avedon or Penn vibe.

Beauty In Strength, New York 1964 by Hiro

+  A look back at fashion photographer Hiro (Yasuhiro Wakabayashi) whose use of bold colour and graphic style paved the way to a job at Harpers Bazaar in 1957.  Having assisted his hero Avedon, and with a style reflecting a little Irving Penn, his bold images capture the new spirit and a different perspective of 60's and 70's fashion photography; more here via NY Mag.

+ Some subtle interior styling from Australian Lara Hutton featuring everyday objects and organic shapes via MaxConnectors.

+  Karlie Kloss for Americana Manhasset Luxury shopping, with inspiration from this years smash movie 'The Artist'.  The catalogue 'Speechless' will show Karlie in different storylines dressed in luxury 20's inspired looks that evoke the flapper era and scenes from the movie.  They even hired the Jack Russell terrier, Uggie featured in the movie to appear in these pics.   A movie will also be shown on their website from mid -August which will be timed for fashion week.   It's all about the 20's at the moment!  More images via WWD here.  Also check out the Americana Manhasset website for its current move featuring Karlie in 50's suburbia tv sitcom sketch.  Too cute!

+  Take a look inside Jacqueline Fink of Little Dandelion's home, filled with bright natural light, painted floorboards, vintage and antique finds.  Its the perfect setting for all those beautifully tactile blankets and scarves she makes - you can see more of her home via The Design Files here and more of her fabulous designs via the Little Dandelion website here.

+  My lemon tree is just about ready to be picked so I'm looking out for all sorts of 'lemony' recipes and this Lemon Polenta Cake doesn't disappoint - from the queen of the kitchen Nigella Lawson.

Hope the sun shines wherever you are (it's just been beaming all day today, yay!); have a splendid weekend. x

Deco skyline inspiration

The simple shapes of the manhattan skyline inspiring these wall panels in the sitting area of a master bedroom in this Manhattan apartment.  It's the refined, elegant shapes that stand out for me and the soft warm tones of the brassy metallic panels against the purple flowers.  And particularly the inclusion of a Tamara de Lempicka drawing (you can just make it out) - my favourite!

More organic and elegant shapes via Elle Decor here.

Garden Party On... Stella McCartney Resort 2013

What a gorgeous way to show your Resort collection... a garden party in New York.

Florals, prints, brights, neons, whites and blacks, fringes, leopard print, and holographic material all come together in what looks like a school fete.  Carnival games, lemonade, games and a jazz band and of course a smattering of celebrities in the form of Anne Hathaway, Amy Poehler and the iconic and beautiful Lauren Hutton.

If this collection is about having 'standout pieces' Stella, then count me in for that yellow dress, the white double breasted, 3/4 length sleeve jacket, the leopard print shoes, a floral blazer and that gorgeous  black tuxedo jacket with the white piping detail on the lapel.

I hear the weather was a little grey?.. but I think you shone bright enough if you were wearing any one of these pieces from the Resort 2013 range.

More great images over at Fashionologie.

Lean, Leggy Cindy

Yep, its Cindy Crawford at 46 and still working it.

Hard edge, sultry, fashion forward, glamazon that she is.  I don't know about you, but no amount of photo-shopping will get my legs that long or lean - what do you think?

I think I'll have another bit of chocolate now...

In The Schedule

Farewell old week and hello weekend- we made it through another busy week.  I've got some great reads for you to schedule in for this weekend, so get comfy and be transported on a fashion shoot with some serious haute couture gowns, glimpse inside a fashion stylist portfolio, listen to the models talk, enter a giveaway for a gorgeous fine art print from photographer Carla Coulson, and flip through the pages of the latest Adore magazine - phew,... I'm exhausted.  Here we go...

Sizzling...

+  Kristen Stewart photographed by maestro Mario Testino for the cover of Vanity Fair July issue.  And inside an editorial featuring Kristen wearing new season haute couture - va voom!  She might come across all too cool and a bit beatnik-ey but there's something haute in this chick when she's wearing dollars worth of couture for these pages -  I think it's in the eyes!  More images via Vanity Fair.   Here is also a video interview with Kristen about the editorial with Mario.  Aah, those gowns - if only for a day!

+  Stunning images from stylist Valentina di Pinto's portfolio - the shoot titled Springtime and captured through the lens of Tony Kim for Glamour mag.   More beautiful images here.  Valentina was recently snapped for Citizen Couture wearing the most gorgeous double breasted coat here - I want one!

Valentino  /  Giambattista Valli Fall 2012-13

+  Do you ever have a great idea only to find out days or weeks later that someone has already come up with something similar?  I hate that feeling... well how do you think someone as big as designer for a major fashion house feels?  Sometimes it really is just coincidence and that rule - 6 degrees of separation!  See more similar fashion at Into The Fashion here.

Coco Rocha wearing Yves Saint Laurent suit, Prada shirt, Lanvin bowtie- Photo Ben Hassett

+ Do you feel like you constantly have to re-evaluate where you're going or what you're doing?  You know, something like updating the 5 year plan to satisfy creativity, happiness, contribution and yourself?  We all have to do it right?  Well top models do this as well... Read an interview with Karolina Kurkova, Angela Lindvall, & Coco Rocha and their strategy after catwalk modelling  via NY Mag here.

Winter Light Montmartre  Copyright Carla Coulson

+ For all you Francophiles out there (I know it's not just me) - do you want to win this absolutely stunning 20x30 fine art print of Paris stairs bathed in light from talented photographer Carla Coulson that will transport you to Montmartre in seconds?  Yes I hear with gusto!... well you can if you enter this fabulous and generous giveaway over at Carla's blog here.    Oh my goodness, please pick me Carla, I have the perfect spot for this print on an empty wall... pretty please!

Julie Christie in Darling
+  Does your style favour Brooke Shields, Michelle Pfeiffer or Julie Christie or Jean Seberg?  W magazine lists classic actress in classic looks from the movies here.

Or perhaps you fancy your perfect shape to be more turn of the century Edwardian lady of the house, or a 20's flapper, or 50's new look?  This interesting article sees 4 actresses try on some distinctly tailored pieces from these and other eras that gives them an insight on how one would actually move around in the pieces from a era gone by-  via More Intelligent Life, via Automatism.

+  If you're thinking of re-decorating this issue of Adore magazine has your white walls covered - whether you're into pastels, bronze, tropical, dark or neutral colours... the pages are jam packed with ideas to please.  It's definitely an art issue, interviews with artists, illustrators, designers, and decorators.  Oh, and they also have an Adore online store too - just to make it easier for you to edit the look!

Rita Hayworth 1939 / Photo Gene Kornman

+  And finally, this weekend is also the Queens Birthday long weekend (I know she's a Taurus and really had her birthday at the end of April... but!)  its a long weekend here and it marks the opening of the snow season.  Now, if I were a skier extraordinaire the slopes would be perfect for the next few days if the recent icy blast of cold weather is anything to go by - but alas, this photo above perfectly fits my image in the snow....totally unco-ordinated!

Have a good weekend and rug up!  brrrrr
xx
