Vintage style

What is it about vintage images that makes you swoon?  Is the fashion, is the backgrounds, is the pose?  Whatever it is, I love to view images from another era; there is so much inspiration.  For me it is definitely about the fashion styling - you just can't wear dresses like that these days... or can you?  The tv serious Mad Men has certainly done alot for bringing back a certain 50's essence to dresses this season as is apparent in shows by Louis Vuitton, Jil Sander and Dior.  And what about the soon to be released Great Gatsby by Baz Luhrmann that will no doubt have us wearing drop waisted sheaths encrusted with beads and sequins for evening whilst adjusting our newly bobbed hair and clicking our mary-jane heels down the red carpet.

Here are some vintage fashion images from the late 50's, from photographer Gordon Parks which will soon be exhibited at New York's International Centre of Photography.    Dreamy chic from another time.

More images via here.  Enjoy...

I think it was the pose, the innate elegance, the photographers, the backgrounds, followed by the fashion. Fashion photography has lost something along the decades, just like films have. xo

As much as I love vintage clothes and photos I don't dress like that, probably because I'd feel a little out of place, I don't know. But I love seeing people on the street that stay true to vintage style and I have a friend in Iceland that buys all her dresses at a market in Berlin and she wears nothing else. She looks fabulous and unique.

I would't mind going to that exhibition but I won't be visiting NY any time soon.

I hope your week is starting well ;-)

I love the first image. I also love the idea of just dressing up more-- for the theater, for the local market, for whatever. There is that feeling of "specialness" that I get from these old images. Also, I think I'm the only one left on the planet that hasn't watched Mad Men yet...have got to start doing that! Have a wonderful week, Helen!! xx
