Toni Maticevski, the quiet achiever

Toni Maticevski ended last week's L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival with a solo show dedicated to his one-off couture collection.

Tailored, sensual, refined, fragile and extravagant pieces floated down the runway in this one of only 2 red carpet runway shows for the whole week (the other being Alex Perry). Some more photos of the beautiful gowns can be found on the LMFF website.

Quite a few of you have mentioned that he was your favourite of all the photos I included in the previous posts here and here - so consider this just the cherry on top.

Working from a nondescript building in a less than glamourous area of Melbourne (picture industrial factories and semi-trailers rolling past on the street), upon entry to the premises you are transported to a buzzing creative studio. I must say also, he's just as refined in person as his beautiful garments - as we were seated opposite him at one of the shows last week and I consider him a quiet achiever, not unlike Tom Ford where Tom discusses his method '...do it first, then talk about it...' in this film recently featured over at LatteLisa. Oh and funnily enough, about 5 years ago, I was designing some bridesmaids dresses for a client that actually had her wedding gown designed by Toni Maticevski and I remember the photos she sent me afterwards were stunning. (Of course the bridesmaids were just as gorgeous if I do say so!)

LMFF - Harpers Bazaar Runway 7

Well it's nearly at the end of another Melbourne Fashion Festival and last night's runway was brought to us by Harpers Bazaar.

A smaller event than opening night but still, a better range of pieces I think. Chic & opulent at Scanlon & Theodore, intricate at Toni Maticevski, elegant at Aurelio Costarella, draping and pleating at Camilla & Marc, sequins at Rachel Gilbert, sophisticated & feminine at Alex Perry and ladylike at Collette Dinnigan.

The standouts for me were the fabrics - rich and opulent, textured in velvet, silky sheer and flowing - if this is representation of Autumn/Winter then we must all go out to lots of events to show off these gorgeous pieces. I've included some favourite photos of mine from the night but plenty more can be found on the L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival website.

Tonight is the final event with a retrospective of Toni Maticevski's work - we won't be able to get tickets to this one (boo hoo).

Opening night - LMFF

Had a great night at Docklands last night for the opening of the L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival. Roving gymnasts/acrobats, dj's, bands, celebrities, food, fireworks, a L'Oreal goodie bag and of course the runway (and just a little champagne).

It's just the beginning of a week long festival that showcases established labels, independent designers and graduate students alongside daily film screenings, exhibitions and business forums covering everything from retail, marketing, consumer markets, trends and the art of fashion. This opening night event was brought to us by department store David Jones, and provided a platform for viewing the new A/W ranges for all their Australian labels.

The show was bright, loud and fun - just the way you want an opening night to be (anyone remember the 1984 song 'Only Shooting Love' by The Time Bandits, an alltime favourite song - well they played that during seating along with early Simple Minds, Psychadaelic Furs and INXS). Guests in the crowd included Dita von Teese (beautiful, stunning skin and really quite petite), singer Tina Arena and the gorgeous Megan Gale (stunning and really, really tall) alongside other local celebrities from television and fashion. My favourites where Scanlon & Theodore (of course), Megan Park, Thurley, Ginger & Smart and Alex Perry. I might be lucky enough to get some more tickets to some events coming up so I'll post those next week.
