A Different View...

Do you often take a person on face value?  Do you judge a book by it's cover?  Do you view one from a certain angle?

Often seeing someone dressed in 'armour' or their 'uniform' striding out into the world with a certain persona or air, you wouldn't really know what to expect from them.

But this portrait of Victoria Beckham for the pages of Vogue Aust., offers a different view; soft, subtle, honest and neutral, and dare I say, any girl next door.

I like a different view sometimes...

Vignette Vision

This image just perked me up... from the studio of artist, stylist, art director, textile designer Carolyn Quartermaine; a little vintage, surrealist, decaying decadence... but that's just  me.  And for some more absolutely stunning works by Carolyn visit her website here.  Something to perk you up this hump day!

Hope you're enjoying your day so far.

Tasty...

A delicious way to end the weekend yesterday; afternoon treat with friends, a drink and a Spinach, Ricotta Tart topped with Toasted Pinenuts.

Keeping it simple & tasty.

Is it time for dinner yet?

Trust your Monday was tasty enough too...

Luminous McQueen...

A stunning editorial of dreamy Alexander McQueen gowns and gorgeous accessories via the lens of Sandro Babler for FGR.

Every item appears luminous and irridescent -  none more so than the models' creamy skin... as a soft shadow dances through the lace embroidered curtains on the paned windows.

The beaded clutch below is my favourite!...

A little backstage - Donna Karan

I just love these images from photographer Jamie Beck over at From Me To You, of Donna Karan's recent Spring 2013 show.

We were having a discussion last week about backstage vs front and centre at a fashion show... and having spent a few years dressing models for shows way back when I was working for a grand department store, I think I can say that the excitement and buzz of backstage trumps sitting out in the audience any day.  But that's just me.

I prefer to see something in its raw state, all the separate components coming together and styling a look and feel the fabrics myself, get the first view and all that ... but I certainly can appreciate it when the spotlight shines out front, the musics starts and the show starts rolling - magic happens.

Take a look below, and click back here to see some photos of the front of house runway also.  It made my day, I hope it does the same for you.

A Room With A View... Paris

On the other side of the world, my morning coffee might have looked like this... I could enjoy a soy latte out on this balcony, no?

Okay, so my view right now doesn't come close... but these images make me feel instantly better!

It's an obsession, I know...

A Room With A View... Amalfi Coast

Oh the blue, blue sea... I was just having a conversation last week about holidaying overseas.

Are you enjoying the view from here?

Something something

Because sometimes something just needs a bit of oomph... and a little bit of pink does a world of good- whether it's the depths of winter or the middle of summer.  Mmmmm, I feel better now.

Hope you're enjoying hump day...

In The Schedule

We're into a new week but what the hey, let's celebrate last week and everything Haute Couture with these links... (battling a head cold and numerous chores last week meant delaying this post until now, I hope it was worth the wait.)

+  Raf Simons celebrated his first outing as head designer at Christian Dior and the result was understated architectural silhouettes, elegant subtle details with a wash of crayola on the lids and vermillion on the lips - my favourite this painterly, ombre strapless gown  - oh, and all the pointy pumps!  More images via Fashionologie.

+  In this era of economic gloom, is Haute Couture relevant?  Every 20 years or so, the commentators say that it is not and that it must shut down - but it's still going strong since its beginnings with Charles Worth in the mid 1800's and pre-war Poiret and post-war Dior; over 100 years of creativity, dreaming, fascination and talented handiwork.

"Haute Couture will exist as long as people want to dream"

... said the French Fashion president of Chambre Syndicale, Didier Grumbach (via abc news).  Existing against all odds, a handful of customers worldwide are able to afford the exorbitant price tags for such fanciful creations let alone wear them somewhere.  But aside from the cost of these pieces, I think you cannot put a cost on an Atelier's heritage and age old tradition that is passed down from generation to generation for new audiences to marvel and admire.

"It is not just about selling clothes; it's an advert, an ideas factory" added Grumbach.

And if it was all doom and gloom, then why would Dolce e Gabbana be launching a Haute Couture line being shown tomorrow/tonight in Paris.  (via)

+  Hedi Slimane celebrated the showing of the YSL Haute Couture Fall 2012 in front of a small private few; so that meant no photos, no images and not much details - but there is always a way to find out what the vibe was, and it sounds very Helmut Newton c1975 capturing images at night on Rue Aubriot, slick, chic, elegant and quintessential parisian Yves.  (Via Fashionista here).

The Tribute shoe is still there in new colours of fuschia, blue & bright yellow and a pointy toe, the tux, pinstripes, ocelot, hotpants, cigarette pants, fluttery blouses with tie details and bias cut short dresses covered in dots.

And if you're into some more Helmut Newton, here are images by Newton via French Vogue here.

YSL Tribute Shoe with Pointy toe - might look like this?

When WWD decided to publish some illustrations by Steven Stipelman with his take on what the YSL range might look like, this is what he came up with... they had to pull the images the next day!  More images via Fashionologie here. And if you're interested in fashion illustrator Steven Stipelman's work, he has a book available here.

+  For me, Christian Dior is the quintessential couture house, particularly with the advent of the New Look in 1947 - here is a beautiful run down on the history of Maison Dior, (in french but you can get the gist).  I need a mask like this one below!

+ But for some, Giorgio Armani is the most important, influential designer of the era, post New Look, for his adaption of men-style in womens fashion - an article found via here.  What do you think?  Certainly the languid, loose mens style pant suits of the 80's and 90's have permeated every wardrobe - hang-on, or was that YSL and his tuxedo suit?

+ Another great article on the ebb and flow of Haute Couture and its rising from the ashes post youthquake London in the 1960's to now, via Vanity Fair.

+ A little Haute Couture outfit by Chanel and it's creation  here.    My fingers ache just watching this short film!

+  An oldie from 2007 from the V&A in London- although the Golden Age of Couture exhibition is no more, you can still click on the interactive link and follow the timeline of your favourite designer and expand on its founding, important dates & accomplishes and interesting facts.  PS: Love the David Downton illustrations too.

+ One more.... A look back at some vintage Haute Couture images from archives and the pages of Vogue here.

Phew, I'm exhausted.  I could have gone on with so much more to add, but I think I will keep the rest for later...  Hope your weekend was creative and bespoke as only you can do too! x

In Season

Its citrus season and we have tangelo's hanging off every branch.  A little bit orange, a little bit mandarin... I've tracked down a recipe for Tangelo Curd Tartlets?  I'll pop the kettle on shall I?

Have you got a favourite citrus-y recipe to share?

Eva Marie Saint by Philppe Halsman

Hope your weekend is spent with loved ones near and far.

Your daily read - is it awesome?

I'm curled up on the sofa going through my daily reads on the web which includes catching up with blog friends, newspapers, magazines and researching the best pots and pans (for real!).  This is the time I get for reading; at the end of the day, peace and quiet and cup of green tea nearby.  On the weekends its Sunday morning that I cherish.  I don't look nearly as glamourous as Marilyn, but that's another story... well maybe if I squint my eyes and look sideways... umm, no that's not working either!

What's on your reading list these day?  Whatever journal, poem, novel or essay it is, I hope you find some quiet time to enjoy the words.

Back to my friends....

PS: if anyone has any suggestions for a tried and tested favourite cookware brand please pass it on to me.

In The Schedule

It's going to be a cold few days ahead so what else is there to do but stay in front of the fireplace, relax and check out some of these great links I uncovered this week; fancy feathers at the Lanvin window; virtual gallery for Valentino; an invitation to an elegant lunch for Longines; candid photo of classic movie stars from the 60's & 70's and a delicious treat to warm the tummy.  Enjoy!

Stay warm this weekend.

In The Schedule

Hold onto your hats, or your turbans, or your headbands, its the weekend... and here are some fabulous reads and links that I've found this week.

+ Following on from the Resort 2013 shows this week, from sweet colour at Alberta Ferretti (here) to glamour tailoring at Zac Posen (above and here), this season might be about transitioning but the impact never lets up.  I think Erin O'Connor is magnificent in these shots chanelling a certain Avedon or Penn vibe.

Beauty In Strength, New York 1964 by Hiro

+  A look back at fashion photographer Hiro (Yasuhiro Wakabayashi) whose use of bold colour and graphic style paved the way to a job at Harpers Bazaar in 1957.  Having assisted his hero Avedon, and with a style reflecting a little Irving Penn, his bold images capture the new spirit and a different perspective of 60's and 70's fashion photography; more here via NY Mag.

+ Some subtle interior styling from Australian Lara Hutton featuring everyday objects and organic shapes via MaxConnectors.

+  Karlie Kloss for Americana Manhasset Luxury shopping, with inspiration from this years smash movie 'The Artist'.  The catalogue 'Speechless' will show Karlie in different storylines dressed in luxury 20's inspired looks that evoke the flapper era and scenes from the movie.  They even hired the Jack Russell terrier, Uggie featured in the movie to appear in these pics.   A movie will also be shown on their website from mid -August which will be timed for fashion week.   It's all about the 20's at the moment!  More images via WWD here.  Also check out the Americana Manhasset website for its current move featuring Karlie in 50's suburbia tv sitcom sketch.  Too cute!

+  Take a look inside Jacqueline Fink of Little Dandelion's home, filled with bright natural light, painted floorboards, vintage and antique finds.  Its the perfect setting for all those beautifully tactile blankets and scarves she makes - you can see more of her home via The Design Files here and more of her fabulous designs via the Little Dandelion website here.

+  My lemon tree is just about ready to be picked so I'm looking out for all sorts of 'lemony' recipes and this Lemon Polenta Cake doesn't disappoint - from the queen of the kitchen Nigella Lawson.

Hope the sun shines wherever you are (it's just been beaming all day today, yay!); have a splendid weekend. x
