In The Schedule

We're into a new week but what the hey, let's celebrate last week and everything Haute Couture with these links... (battling a head cold and numerous chores last week meant delaying this post until now, I hope it was worth the wait.)

+  Raf Simons celebrated his first outing as head designer at Christian Dior and the result was understated architectural silhouettes, elegant subtle details with a wash of crayola on the lids and vermillion on the lips - my favourite this painterly, ombre strapless gown  - oh, and all the pointy pumps!  More images via Fashionologie.

+  In this era of economic gloom, is Haute Couture relevant?  Every 20 years or so, the commentators say that it is not and that it must shut down - but it's still going strong since its beginnings with Charles Worth in the mid 1800's and pre-war Poiret and post-war Dior; over 100 years of creativity, dreaming, fascination and talented handiwork.

"Haute Couture will exist as long as people want to dream"

... said the French Fashion president of Chambre Syndicale, Didier Grumbach (via abc news).  Existing against all odds, a handful of customers worldwide are able to afford the exorbitant price tags for such fanciful creations let alone wear them somewhere.  But aside from the cost of these pieces, I think you cannot put a cost on an Atelier's heritage and age old tradition that is passed down from generation to generation for new audiences to marvel and admire.

"It is not just about selling clothes; it's an advert, an ideas factory" added Grumbach.

And if it was all doom and gloom, then why would Dolce e Gabbana be launching a Haute Couture line being shown tomorrow/tonight in Paris.  (via)

+  Hedi Slimane celebrated the showing of the YSL Haute Couture Fall 2012 in front of a small private few; so that meant no photos, no images and not much details - but there is always a way to find out what the vibe was, and it sounds very Helmut Newton c1975 capturing images at night on Rue Aubriot, slick, chic, elegant and quintessential parisian Yves.  (Via Fashionista here).

The Tribute shoe is still there in new colours of fuschia, blue & bright yellow and a pointy toe, the tux, pinstripes, ocelot, hotpants, cigarette pants, fluttery blouses with tie details and bias cut short dresses covered in dots.

And if you're into some more Helmut Newton, here are images by Newton via French Vogue here.

YSL Tribute Shoe with Pointy toe - might look like this?

When WWD decided to publish some illustrations by Steven Stipelman with his take on what the YSL range might look like, this is what he came up with... they had to pull the images the next day!  More images via Fashionologie here. And if you're interested in fashion illustrator Steven Stipelman's work, he has a book available here.

+  For me, Christian Dior is the quintessential couture house, particularly with the advent of the New Look in 1947 - here is a beautiful run down on the history of Maison Dior, (in french but you can get the gist).  I need a mask like this one below!

+ But for some, Giorgio Armani is the most important, influential designer of the era, post New Look, for his adaption of men-style in womens fashion - an article found via here.  What do you think?  Certainly the languid, loose mens style pant suits of the 80's and 90's have permeated every wardrobe - hang-on, or was that YSL and his tuxedo suit?

+ Another great article on the ebb and flow of Haute Couture and its rising from the ashes post youthquake London in the 1960's to now, via Vanity Fair.

+ A little Haute Couture outfit by Chanel and it's creation  here.    My fingers ache just watching this short film!

+  An oldie from 2007 from the V&A in London- although the Golden Age of Couture exhibition is no more, you can still click on the interactive link and follow the timeline of your favourite designer and expand on its founding, important dates & accomplishes and interesting facts.  PS: Love the David Downton illustrations too.

+ One more.... A look back at some vintage Haute Couture images from archives and the pages of Vogue here.

Phew, I'm exhausted.  I could have gone on with so much more to add, but I think I will keep the rest for later...  Hope your weekend was creative and bespoke as only you can do too! x

In The Schedule

I'm feeling fabulous after some pampering at the hairdresser this morning - perfect for a sunny autumn day, so how about some more fabulousness...

+ Stunning abstract images from a collaboration between fashion designer Mary Katrantzou and photographer/filmmaker Erik Madigan Heck referencing Catholic iconography, Greek mythology and Parisian surrealist painters.  The images speak for themselves - More images via.

+  Marchesa will be launching a new website come Summer 2012, but in the meantime we can swoon over these gorgeous offerings to entice the senses shown via video here.  The girls will also be designing a diffusion line which include outfits for daywear and every occasion other than red carpet.  Yay!

+ And one for the merchandisers; Repetto, the quintessential French brand for dance shoes and indeed 'those' ballet flats, and a fabulously unique way to engage the customer and everyone walking by the windows of their rue de la Paix store.   Oh, how I wish I was there - clever!  Via.

+  Claudia Schiffer, as translated by Self Service magazine; she's still got it my friends!

+  Fancy yourself as a magazine editor?  Well my friends, sign up as an intern over at Elle Uk and you could be doing just that - put your stamp on the October 2012 issue of Elle UK here.  Yep, for real.

+  Sophia Loren's family meatball recipe ? - don't ya just love the web... bringing all the corners of the world to your kitchen!  via Manger, via Automatism

Enjoy a fabulous weekend xx

Johanna Johnson - elegant and refined

Having originally studied graphic design, Johanna Johnson started her first collection when she couldn't find a dress she wanted to wear for her own wedding (I know that feeling!).  Taking inspiration from 1920's and from grand old Hollywood, her designs are beautifully detailed with beads, sequins, and lace and all are hand-finished in Australia.

There is definitely a vintage feel to these designs, the details are just beautiful, the palette subdued but not without the obligatory black for vamping it up.  Johanna designs one or two bridal collections, as well as bridal and evening-wear accessories, a Trousseau line, and a lifestyle range that includes day wear, shoes, candles, lotions and scrubs.  The gowns are all just stunning and you might remember that Johanna's profile skyrocketed last year when Christina Hendricks wore one of her gorgeous creations at the Emmy Awards.  Needless to say, she is now firmly entrenched in Hollywood wardrobes and red-carpets.

Johanna recently showed her Spring/Summer 2012/13 collection at Sydney Fashion Week.

Such beauty, such delicacy and such elegance.  My favourite are the accessories - beaded headbands, cuffs and encrusted capelets worn to add pizazz to any outfit, day or night.

More images from the Johanna Johnson bridal, trousseau, accessories and lifestyle range can be found at Johanna's website.  But be prepared for some serious oohing & swooning - don't say I didn't warn you.

In The Schedule

Yep, here we are again at the pointy end of the week - what fun have you got planned for your two days at home?  Whatever you're up to, take some time to read through these lovely links...

+ A fabulously glamourous and intense editorial via Fashion Gone Rogue - kinda reminds me of the Serge Lutens campaigns for Shiseido in the 80's... Love those wine coloured lips.

+  Channelling a certain Grace on the red carpet at Cannes perhaps?  More pics over at Style.com.  That seafoam Giambattista Valli gown on Diane Kruger is absolutely STUNNING!  And how beautiful is Ines De La Fressange - I love the addition of that ivy as belt.

+ An interview with Francisco Costa talking about his early years, his inspiration, the new range of Calvin Klein dresses for Macys and channelling that Brazilian laid back vibe and sunkissed palette via Tmagazine.

+  Check out these gorgeous headquarters of new homewares label Aerin..., yep, that's the influence of Aerin Lauder and her new venture into homewares, via AD.  Also take a look at the Aerin tumblr site here.  I think it'll be slightly glamourous don't you?

+ Talk about influential, a list of the 25 most influential female designers since, well since the beginning, via Fashionista.  I spy Coco, Madame Gres, Vionnet and the Mulleavy Sisters - pretty inspirational.

+ Seriously I will need more shelving at home to cater for the increasing number of Designer books being produced in just this year alone!  Alber Elbaz focuses on the minutae of the craft, the handiwork and all the work that goes into creating those ravishing outfits; a preview here via Fashionologie.

+  Love having the home filled with flowers but matching them to the right size or shaped vase is a bit of a struggle?  Well Gwyneth teaches us a thing to two about the right bouquet with the right vessel via her website  Goop.  Sounds so easy when someone else does it!

+  And just when you thought it would be safe to don one of the gowns featured above.... ta dah... a breakfast pizza - seriously, how good does this look!  Via The Kitchy Kitchen.  I think it has something to do with that sensational looking runny egg!

+ Finally, if you squint and tilt your head - this could be me wearing this lovely pinky/lilacy dress with those great heels (but probably not as tanned) - via Peony Park.  (Well, of course it's not me...)

Hope you all have an inspired weekend!

Snap!

Don't ask ... I don't know why, but I love the 'match' of these two images.  There's something very renaissance about them I think.  And the colour (what is that, emerald, teal?) - that dress is so my colour!  In fact I think I made something like in the 80's  - except it was watermark taffeta... whatever happened to taffeta?  I love taffeta, let's all go out and buy/make/borrow a taffeta dress or coat and some estate jewellery!

Hope you're having a pleasant, if not bejewelled, start to the week!

Perfect Time For A Holiday... Capri

Evoking glamourous Capri in it's hey day of the 50's & 60s, Capri Tiberio Palace, since the earlier twentieth century to now, merges Italian dolce vita with the a new fashionable elegance.  Seriously this place is a feast for the eyes!

The style is Regency, the architecture Mediterranean, the palette is refined in the 60 rooms (including 17 suites) - sorbet hues of mint, rose, lemon, lilac and turquoise; references to old hollywood abound in the form of framed prints in each room (think Sophia Loren and Marlon Brandon); furnishings are beautifully detailed in exquisite jewelled colours and vignettes of coral, miniature busts, books and vintage objects abound.  Bathrooms are fitted with travertine and decorated with mosaics; the bar and terrace offers a view of Capri and the beautiful seas and the library houses a fabulous collection of Taschen volumes just in case you want to keep your design interests at your fingertips.  Now, I'm not really one for an open air jacuzzi but the one on the Mojito Terrace allows you take a 360degrees view of the Mediterranean... okay so maybe I'll have one glass of bubbly before dinner perhaps?  I might have a massage in the spa which is spread over 2 floors later on, hmmm?

The range of rooms covers Deluxe Suite, Family (yay!), Terrace Suite, Ambassador and Imperial Suite and vary in sizes, but with stunning interiors like these would it really matter which room you were in?  These are seriously beautifully styled rooms - I just can't decide which I like the most.  In fact I had to stop myself from taking too many screen shots from the Tiberio Palace website, you'll have to click through to see for yourself.

I'm just imagining I'm having a seasonal breakfast on the terrace of the restaurant - aah that sunshine!  Anyone for a cafe latte?

Stunning details

The room looks good enough to eat... not to mention lunch

I can see myself swanning down this staircase in a chiffon gown

Those turquoise armchairs!

View from the private jacuzzi

The restaurant and a view from one of the terrace suits

A little bit of humour too

C'est Est!

The latest issue of easy to digest Est Magazine..., it's jam-packed full of styling ideas for both home and wardrobe, a great Manhattan guide, a celebration of 'on trend' tangerine and of course a peek inside some fabulous homes.  It's a great issue!

I love this chair with just a hint of tangerine in the room

Snap, that's my poster too!

Can't afford the Tom Ford dress of Gwyneths?
... there's sure to be something here that will enable you to mirror her style.

Sky's the limit!

In The Schedule

Where has the week gone?  I can't believe it's Friday already... all that's left to do is some tidying up and get ready for the weekend.  Oh, and a run through of links I stumbled upon this week -

+  Through the eyes of Karlie Kloss, Rosario Dawson and Rene Celestin at the Elie Saab show via Fashion etc.

+  Taylor Tomasi Hill styling the Oroton show at this weeks Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Sydney via Harpers Bazaar.

+  Anna Dello Russo designs an Accessories line for H&M - there's plenty a glitter here!  And a cute video where she calls herself a fashion victim and a guardian of fashion via here.

+  If you're planning a getaway to Amsterdam consider this cool guest house for a stay found via DailyDreamDecor.

+ Don't you just love the use of video as advertising / art ... this dreamy video featuring crystal objects and dyes - so pretty... via Nowness.

+  Over at LatteLisa  you will find a great fragrance giveway sponsored by Icelandic label Ella by Elinros Lindal.

ELLA Day is described by ELLA as a fresh and exhilarating scent, at once light, sweet and sharp. The scent has light notes of lemon and verbena, and a grounding base note of patchouli. Think lemons and the blue Mediterranean Sea. ELLA Day is a lively perfume for the modern, energetic woman who leads by example and charms without effort. (size 100 ml/3.4 oz)

ELLA Night is described by ELLA as a soft and sensuous scent, at once heady, sweet and hypnotising. It's the ultimate evening scent with notes of sweet almond, vanilla and cinnamon. Think deep red roses and dark brown fur.  ELLA Night is deliciously dramatic and seductive. (size 100 ml/3.4 oz)

This fashion house has a wondeful Slow Fashion Movement ethos which really appeals to me.    The brand is all about creating something in a "thoughtful way, causing the least damage to the environment", "empowering women" and encouraging "every member of our team to maximise ones potential in creating something extraordinary"... now if that isn't inspiring in this day of throwaway fashion and acquiring the lastest trends for the sake of it, I don't know what is. Follow the links to enter the giveway and then go to the brands website to pick out your favourite - the cape has my name written all over it!

+ And finally, some excerpts from this weeks Mercedes Benz Fashion week... via here.

Have a lovely weekend.
